Poultry manure helps
growers improve soils
NULEAF Organics specialises in
composted and fresh poultry
manure, which is commonly
used by growers to improve their crops.
The Mannum company prdocues
20,000 tonnes of compost each year,
with about 1000t of finished fertiliser
available to growers.
The composting process begins when
the company trucks in manure, in bulk,
from local chicken farms.
Manure is tipped into 300t rows, with
each row numbered and documented in
terms of its origin.
Drippers are then positioned along the
top of the row, and water is added to
start the compost heat process.
Heating is monitored weekly, with 62C
degrees being the minimum temperature
required before turning the rows.
The entire composting process can take
up to 13 weeks, with each row turned at
least six times using a compost turner.
Heat charts and nutritent analysis
information are available on request.
When the process is complete, it is
screened or sold from the rows, and is
known as composted fertiliser. Nuleaf
produces a fine screened or unscreened
low cost fertiliser with nitrogen,
phosphorous and potassium, and good
levels of organic carbon with minor
levels of trace elements.
Nuleaf has a screening plant,
weighbridge and high-tip loaders to cater
for orders, and can provide bulk

Bio approach helps cut crown gall disease
SOIL-BORNE diseases need swift
management. Becker Under wood
Australasia offers a biological control
agent to fight crown gall disease in
horticultural plants such as stone fruit
Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a
ubiquitous soil-borne bacterium, causes
crown gall disease by colonising and
then injecting wounded plant cells with
genes from its tumour-inducing plasmid.
This interaction is unique and is a
natural genetic modification system that
leads to integration of bacterial DNA
into plant cell DNA. In effect, the
disease bacterium causes a genetically
modified plant that now grows galls and
produces food for the causal pathogenic
The disease is widespread throughout
the world and causes lack of plant
vigour, reduced horticultural production
and quality. Galled nursery stock cannot
be sold and must be destroyed. There
are no totally resistant plant varieties or
any chemical control for this plant
Plant propagators risk considerable
financial costs if they are forced to
destroy galled stock. Infected material
cannot be sold. Similarly, orchardists and
rose growers, among other
horticulturists, face lowered produce
quality and yield from the uncontrolled
disease. Use of pathogen-free soil is not
One option is for orchardists to dip
new disease-free seeds, cuttings or
seedling stock in a suspension of Nogall,
BUA's biological control agent, which
helps in significant disease reduction.
Nogall is quick and easy to apply.
Water is added to the product and plants
are dipped into the solution just before
planting. It can be used when
germinating seeds, striking cuttings, and
during field planting.
One 250-gram pack when mixed with
12 litres of water can treat as many as
10,000 seeds, up to 500 seedlings and
between 200 and 5000 cuttings,
depending on their size. Special additives
also ensure effective adhesion to the plant,
making it easy to apply and long lasting.
