The South Australian Grower -- December 2009/January 2010
Quantum Mist range,
orchard spraying entered a new era.
The equipment made the job
simpler and more efficient, with
the added benefit of significant
reductions in drift.
The popularity of the system has
been so great that it has spread
much wider than orchards.
It is available in tower design for
tall tree and orchard spraying, in a
horizontal layout for spraying
ground crops such as strawberries
and vegetables and for single, two
and three-row spraying in vineyards.
Croplands spokesman Don
Thorp believes the success and
popularity of the Quantum Mist
spraying system centres around the
design of its hydraulically-powered
axial flow five-blade spraying heads.
"Developed in conjunction with
engineers at the South Australian
Research & Development Institute,
the five-bladed hydraulically-
powered fans produce the
maximum quantity of air for
maximum coverage and
penetration of all types of
canopies," he said.
"These hydraulically-driven axial
type fan heads are fully-integrated,
lightweight, impact resistant and
feature roto-moulded cowlings,
sealed bearings and can hold up to
16 recessed nozzles a head.
"Combine the airflow and the
directional adjustability of the spray
heads with the outputs from the
standard eight recessed nozzles in
each head, the result is maximum
Don says that using the tractor
hydraulics to drive the spray heads
gives the Quantum Mist simplicity
as well as efficiency.
"The output from the heads is
completely independent of the
tractor's revolutions per minute
and travelling speed," he said.
"According to our users, the
Quantum Mist technology provides
better coverage through more
accurate targeting, the use of less
water and greater time saving.
"When we launched the spraying
system in 1999, we offered it with
a 500-millimetre five-blade
spraying head only.
The Quantum Mist spraying
ranging from 500 litres and 700L
for small three-point linkage units
up to 4000L on trailing machines.
The Quantum Mist single-row
trailed sprayer features four fully
adjustable, axial fan spray heads
providing excellent coverage and
the ability to adjust each head
independently for total canopy
targeting. Two-row sprayers feature
eight fans, while for three-row
spraying, 12 fans are used.
Standard equipment on all units
includes high-flow venturi agitation
combined with pump bypass for
excellent chemical agitation. The
trailing machines feature large
capacity 125L a minute to
185L/min (depending on model)
diaphragm pumps and rinsing and
hand wash tanks.
They are offered with a choice of
heavy-duty steel rims and tyres on
suspension axle, or tandem sprung
axle assemblies for superior ride
along with fixed or self-steer
drawbar options to accommodate
all-terrain and headland needs, a
full range of liquid control options
for the operator, including the
HV4000 Auto Rate controller with
L/ha or L/100 metres display and
optional data-logging capability.
