Agroplus big winner
GROWING fruit in the Adelaide
Hills has its challenges for Roger
Parker, with steep slopes the
enemy of many orchard tractors.
His search for a specialist orchard tractor
ended with the Deutz-Fahr Agroplus 87,
and after clocking up more than 200 hours
on his machine, Roger says the Agroplus 87
is the only tractor that offered the base
configuration he needed.
"It has the right length wheel base - not a
narrow front axle and short wheel base like
with other brands," Roger says.
"We also wanted an orchard cab -- and it
has to be able to climb hills and do a lot of
work on the slope. The Agroplus 87 has
better stability on the hills."
Roger operates AF Parker and Sons
together with his brothers Donald, Brian
and Malcolm. They grow apples and
cherries in their 80 hectare orchard at
Uraidla and strawberries on their farms at
The Agroplus 87 handles all general work
applications and pulls a 1000 litre airblast
sprayer and 3.3 metre slasher at the orchard
with ease. The Parkers also plan to use the
tractor to pull a ripper through the
strawberry farm at Woodside.
"The tractor works at about 3.5
kilometres per hour in the orchard, and its
pulling power is fine," Roger says.
He has also found the tractor comfortable
and easy to drive, and was pleased by the
layout of the cab -- especially the flat floor.
"It has the right configuration and good
power, comfort and cab set-out. A lot of
tractors don't have all of those things
combined -- and can still get under orchard
The Deutz-Fahr Agroplus series features
liquid-cooled, reliable and economical three
or four cylinder engines.
Designed with optimum weight
distribution - 45:55 per cent - tractors in
the series have a low centre of gravity and
Drivers can also feel safe knowing the
Agroplus series is equipped with a four-
wheel braking system.
The Agroplus 87 provides a lifting force
of up to 3.6 tonnes and three PTO speeds.
While the Parkers' operations were more
suited to a conventional geared system, the
Agroplus series can also feature an under-
load hydraulic power shuttle next to the
steering wheel. This allows drivers to flick
between for ward and reverse with ease.
