AUSTRALIAN almond growers are
experiencing exceptional industry
growth, according to statistics
tabled and discussed at the national
growers' conference held at Mildura last
Almond Board of Australia chief
executive officer Ross Skinner says there
has been a 9 per cent increase in world
demand, and Australia is in an ideal
position to take advantage of this growth
following significant new plantings of
orchards in the past decade.
With many trees still to reach full
maturity, there will be a subsequent huge
increase in production.
"We have seen most of the expansion in
the eastern states," Mr Skinner said. "But
South Australia has also increased
production, particularly in the Riverland.
"There is still the potential for further
growth because the SA climate is ideal for
almonds. They can't be grown over a wide
climate range, and the Riverland and parts
of the Adelaide Plains provide the right
mix of temperature and water availability,
so long as the land is also available for
future orchard expansion."
