ATVs are as safe as
you want them to be
THERE is no doubting the popularity of
all-terrain vehicles. On many properties,
they have taken over the tractor and farm
utility vehicle for some work and in others,
replaced the two-wheel motorbike altogether.
It is estimated that about 80 per cent of
10,000 or so ATVs sold in Australia each
year are bought by orchardists, viticulturists,
market gardeners, farmers, graziers, station
owners, hobby farmers and weekenders.
Originally developed as fun machines with
three wheels, they were quickly withdrawn
from the market because of their lack of sta-
bility and replaced with the modern four-
As the popularity of these machines as farm
vehicles grew, it triggered the development
of a host of ancillary equipment.
First there were front and rear-mounted
carry racks. Supply companies quickly began
developing a range of 'mounted' equipment
to fit and operate off these carry racks, the
most popular among which were plastic
chemical tanks for spot-spraying.
Factory-fitted tow bars were fixed for
pulling smaller -- sometimes hydraulic -- tip-
ping trailers as were a range of other equip-
ment including trailing boomspray
machines, spreaders and grain-feeder units.
Small hydraulic packs, three-point linkage
systems and powered drive-kits were also
developed as ATV add-ons.
Some manufacturers extended the versatil-
ity of their machines by introducing a
reverse gear in the transmission systems
while others incorporated auto or hydraulic
But all these developments put a big ques-
tion mark on the machine's operational safety.
Studies by the National Health & Safety
Commission and other organisations
showed that ATVs were involved in numer-
ous on-property accidents and in 10 on-
farm deaths in 2010.
Another study report pointed out that
most on-property accidents were caused by
carelessness, inexperienced operators, the use
of the vehicles in dangerous conditions, or
not adhering to manufacturer specifications.
The same report also stated that 'bikes'
burdened with attachments such as spray
packs can more than double the maximum
or recommended carryweight and be dan-
gerous, even lethal, in the hands of inexpe-
Yet another sur vey showed evidence that
towing limits were often exceeded, putting
major stresses on the bikes and severely affect-
ing their braking performance and stability.
Farmsafe Australia has warned there can be
serious legal implications for landholders and
others in the event of an accident if opera-
tors were found to be inexperienced or were
using the vehicle in an unsafe situation.
In South Australia, WorkCover has issued
a Hazard Alert Bulletin instructing owners,
employers and operators on workplace safe-
ty requirements when using ATVs and
warning of potential hazards.
Together with major ATV suppliers, the
Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries
has produced an informative and instruc-
tional 20-minute video You and Your ATV
that spells out safe-practices.
