THE Virginia Horticultural Centre
hosted a seminar on January 12
organised by AIS Greenworks.
Keynote speaker Grodan business sup-
port manager for export markets Andy
Lee, recognised internationally as a
leading authority in root zone manage-
ment, touched on a variety of important
topics and different aspects of precision
growing: water management, vegetative
and generative steering techniques, the
importance of plant and nutrient bal-
ance and drain water recycling.
He reinforced the idea that precision
growing was the most efficient and
effective method of production because
it focused on optimising inputs to gen-
erate maximum output.
It was a continuous process of devel-
opment within the hi-tech greenhouse
sector which strived to improve produc-
tion while using less inputs.
"Precision growing will shape sustain-
able production practices of the future,"
The seminar was attended by leading
representatives of the industry, such as
Cafcakis Hydroponics, Redsun
Hydroponics, Tomato Exchange,
Powerplants, Rijkswaan, DT Vu
Hydroponics and Freshway Farms.
The session formed part of a series of
seminars on precision growing and
propagation around Australia and New
Zealand with plant experts Andy Lee
and Hans Van Herk-Grodan.
Their tour also dedicated a number of
days to on-site training, offering techni-
cal crop support to growers and propa-
gators, such as Trandos Hydroponic
"This is just another example of
Grodan's commitment to the Australian
market," AIS Greenworks general man-
ager Scott Featherston said.
Greenworks is already planning and
organising, together with Grodan,
future seminars and visits to sites in The
Netherlands for 2012 and 2013.
