Home' Grower : April 2012 Contents The South Australian Grower -- April 2012
IN 1912, 16-year-old Cliff
Howard of Gilgandra, New
South Wales, had an idea that
forever changed the way many
farms were cultivated.
To make hoeing more efficient,
Mr Howard fixed a number of
hoe blades to a powered axle so
that they would rotate and dig the
earth while pulling for ward at the
same time. All the farmer had to
do was walk behind and steer
using bicycle-type handles.
Before this, farmers were using
digging sticks to loosen soil for
planting or to remove weeds.
At its peak in 1970, the company
he established to make his then
extensive range of rotar y hoes --
from walk-behind to tractor-drawn
models -- was exporting 100,000
'rotavators' to 120 countries.
After protective tariffs were
removed in the 1970s, manufac-
turing rotary hoes were no longer
feasible and production in
Today, the majority of rotary
hoes sold in Australia -- and tillers
and mulchers -- come from
High on the sales charts are prod-
ucts from Italian manufacturer
Maschio Gaspardo, which has been
operating for more than 40 years.
Maschio products distributed
through Melbourne-based PFG
Australia Group include eight
rotary hoe ranges, five power har-
row ranges, five mulcher ranges
along with planters, cereal drills,
vegetable drills and cultivators
under the Gaspardo label.
Maschio rotary hoes and tillers
have worked well for the agricul-
ture industry world-wide.
They come in various sizes to fit
small, medium or large farm
Smaller models are suitable for
hobby farmers and can work well
in vineyards, orchards and veg-
etable crops while bigger models
are fitted with accessories that let
them work through very difficult
Preparing the ground, mechani-
cal control of weeds, breaking-up
established grassland, and 'direct'
preparation without ploughing
are some of their many functions.
New and improved sealing sys-
tems guarantee reliability with lit-
tle or no maintenance
Duo-cone sealing on some rotor
hubs allows oil bath lubrication of
bearings, ensuring higher per-
formances and greater durability.
Machines turn 'amphibious'
with water-tight sealing, guaran-
teeing maximum performance in

dusty environments and when

Rotors supported by oversized
roller bearings help them face
strong impacts and overloading
Rotary hoes and power harrows
are important implements for
seed-bed preparation. Advantages
• Optimal soil break-up. Ideal dis-
tribution between the soil lower
in the ground and larger sods on
the surface prevents formation
of surface crusts. The rotary
teeth movement exercises hori-
zontal -- not vertical -- pressure
and this avoids the formation of
hard layers in soil depths.
• Versatility, as they adapt to most
soil conditions and are perfectly
capable of working both
ploughed and un-ploughed land.
• Ability to bury stubble or trash
in the upper soil layer. Use of
specific blades produces ideal
• Levelling bar and roller move-
ment guarantees soil levelling.
• Possibility of use in combina-
tion with seed drills, consider-
ably reducing operation costs.
Efficient working of the soil,
combined with great soil break-
up, allows noteworthy incorpora-
tion of the surface residue and
good control of yearly weeds.
The prepared seed bed now lives
up to expectations.

Our vegetable vacuum planters
are the result of the experience
GASPARDO has gained in precision
planting. Structural functionality
and component modularity make
this a versatile machine for the
specialised sector of vegetables
The new ORIETTA - OLIMPIA
range of vegetable planters has a
substantially updated seeding unit.
We have created a new increased
distributor body where a 22 cm
diameter seed disc is housed.
With the same working speed
of the tractor, the disc requires
a slower rotation speed and
therefore higher precision of the
seed distribution is guaranteed.
