Moreno moulds bold plans for Asia market
AFTER battling cheap Chinese
imports in Australia, Moreno Global
Plastics plans to take the fight to
Asia in a bold expansion bid,
according to marketing and
operations director Robert
Robert says his father Cesare
Scartozzi, founder of the leading
plastic bin business, is working to
build an international presence for
"He's looking to grow the
business in South East Asia, and
also put a joint venture in place in
New Zealand," he said.
"New Zealand is a strong country
in terms of agriculture, so we think
there is potential there, particularly
with the apple-growing side of
"As for Asia, we've aligned
ourselves with a moulding
company that mould our bins in
Europe, and we have the rights for
that in South East Asia too."
"We're starting to put our feelers
out there with feasibility studies
and market research."
Robert said people had been
drawn to Chinese products but
were disappointed with quality.
While Cesare concentrates on
international expansion, Robert is
focusing on building the business
After 18 years in the agri-bin
industry, the company is branching
into waste-bin sales.
Robert says agri-bins are still the
core part of the business.
"At the moment, one of our
strongest products is the BB bin
range. It's available in a quarter-bin
and half-bin size, with both solid
and vented versions," he said.
"I'd say it's one of the biggest
selling products, especially for
stone fruit growers, because they
tend to look for a smaller bin
option that caters for more fragile
sorts of fruits."

Carbon ideas squash plastic
CARTON producers are facing a
serious threat from the decision by
Coles and Woolworths to use plastic
crates, according to Pat Strangio,
Produce Carton & Bin Supplies.
"Coles are making their own crates
and Woolies are going through CHEP
Australia with their growers, which is
a challenge," he said.
In response, the Virginia-based
family business is moving into pre-
assembled cartons so growers will
not have to put them together
"We are doing machine-erected
boxes more and more. Back in 1995
we had one erecting machine, and
now we have nine," he said.
Pat's father Jim started the business
in 1965, a time when cartons were
replacing wooden boxes.
The company now employs about 20
people, with Pat handling sales and
accounts, and brother Tony taking
care of dispatch and manufacturing.
Their product range includes
strawberry trays, tomato trays, lettuce
trays, potato cartons, cherry trays and
