The South Australian Grower – July 2013
FRESHCARE is the fresh
produce industry’s on-farm
assurance program, estab-
lished to meet the needs of
Australian growers in fulfilling
domestic and international mar-
Its practical approach to helping growers and
packers assure customers that their produce is safe
to eat and sustainably grown has seen thousands
of businesses adopt the program since its launch
in July 2000. Australia’s largest on-farm assurance
program has more than 5000 members. Exciting
new developments in 2013-14, including interna-
tional benchmarking to the global food safety ini-
tiative, will ensure its growth.
Freshcare is widely accepted as a practical,
industr y focused, food safety program. It is an
approved standard for direct supply to Coles and
IGA, and is an approved standard for indirect
supply to Woolworths ‘through a Woolworths
Quality Assurance Certified business’ and to
ALDI and COSTCO, through businesses with a
standard benchmarked to GFSI.
But Freshcare is not just about food safety and
quality. The Freshcare
Environmental Viticulture and Environmental
Winer y codes are also being widely adopted,
providing an independent assurance of on-farm
environmental practices and sustainable produc-
The rapid uptake of Freshcare Environmental
Certification by Australian wine-grape growers
and wineries, has established it as the fastest-
growing environmental assurance program for
the Australian wine industr y.
The company has been working closely with
the Australian wine industr y together with the
Winemakers Federation of Australia since the
launch of the industr y’s voluntar y environmen-
tal scheme Entwine Australia in 2009.
Freshcare’s viticulture and winer y codes of
practice provide businesses with a tailor-made
environmental management system specific to
the processes involved with wine grape produc-
tion and wine making.
The viticulture and winer y program manuals
have now been released in a second-edition for-
Businesses choosing to implement Freshcare’s
programs participate in a training workshop to
provide a strong foundation for compliance and
establish hands-on ownership of the system.
Certification is achieved through independent
auditing of the programs, now undertaken on a
triennial basis for businesses who are participants
of the Wine Federation’s Entwine Australia
Cer tification allows individual businesses to
demonstrate compliance, consistency and conti-
nuity in environmental achievement.
Entwine Australia, launched in December
2008, is a national assurance program that allows
Australian winemakers and wine grape growers
to receive formal recognition of their environ-
mental practices according to recognised stan-
To qualify for Entwine membership, companies
must be certified against an independently audit-
ed environmental certification program that is
approved by the Winemakers’ Federation of
Australia – most use Freshcare – and must report
each year against nominated Entwine resource
The recent Freshcare environmental wine
industr y workshop at Penfolds Magill Estate, just
outside Adelaide, brought together experts from
wine industr y organisations, research institu-
tions, trainers and auditors for a day of presenta-
tions, discussions, and networking opportunities.
“The Freshcare workshop brought together our
stakeholders and experts from many fields to
provide a forum for both professional develop-
ment and for the exchange of ideas and informa-
tion; helping us improve the training, support
and certification programs we provide to the
Australian wine industr y,” said Clare Hamilton-
Bate, Freshcare’s national program manager.
