Home' Grower : April 2010 Contents The South Australian Grower -- April 2010 1 7
HPort Augusta will be boosted by the
constr uction of a 2000 square metre
greenhouse facility, 10 kilometres south of
United Kingdom-based company Seawater
Greenhouse is using an innovative desalina-
tion method to provide water for its green-
house at Port Patterson.
Seawater Greenhouse received a $115,000
State Government infrastructure grant to help
cover the $700,000 of infrastructure costs
associated with the $1.48 million project.
The company's innovative technology uses
seawater to cool and humidify the air that
ventilates the greenhouse and sunlight to
distil fresh water -- suitable for vegetable irri-
gation -- from seawater.
Tomatoes, capsicums, cucumbers and let-
tuce are expected to be among the hydro-
ponic crops grown in the glasshouse com-
plex, with total vegetable production esti-
mated at about 100,000 kilograms per year.
State agriculture minister Paul Caica said
the new development had many benefits for
the Port Augusta community, including
increased access to fresh produce.
"This is more than just an infrastructure proj-
ect, it has great environmental value as well,
with the potential to stimulate similar future
developments in the area," Mr Caica said.
"It will reduce horticultural reliance on
fresh water and allow more growers to relo-
cate from the Murray-Darling Basin."
Port Augusta Mayor Joy Baluch said Port
Augusta was chosen because of the city's
warm climate with plenty of sun and close-
ness to sea water.
"The use of natural systems in this green
process mirrors Council's desire to promote
Port Augusta as an AridSmart City," Mayor
"What that means is we recognise the
harshness of our climate and employ natural
systems to overcome the disadvantages that
this climate brings with it. The use of arid
land plants in domestic settings is but one
indication of this approach."
The glasshouse complex is scheduled for
completion by the middle of this year.
Tomatoes, capsicums, cucumbers and lettuce
are expected to be among the hydroponic crops
grown in the Seawater Greenhouse complex.
