The South Australian Grower -- July 2010
Newer varieties offer a much
improved disease resistance
K ONG iceberg, and the
Roundhouse are two newer
varieties that are giving South
Australian growers options for
improved disease resistance.
South Pacific Seeds SA sales
manager Matthew Sheedy says
Kong has an improved disease
package over Silverado and is
being grown in the Virginia and
Murray Bridge areas.
He says the spring/autumn
har vest variety, and its winter
har vest counterpart Roundhouse
have been introduced largely
because of their superior mildew
The varieties also had a reduced
susceptibility to tip burn, which
was important for growers
targeting the boxed lettuce market.
"With iceberg, a lot of growers
seem to be going back to boxes
rather than bags," Mr Sheedy said.
"Varieties that are less prone to
tip burn are advantageous if you're
cutting the whole head for boxed
lettuces. If it is a trend that the
supermarkets are going that way,
then we need to have varieties that
are less susceptible to tip burn."
Kong and Roundhouse are large-
framed lettuces, with resistance to
Nasanovia Aphid (Nr0) and full
resistance to all current Australian
races of downy mildew (1-26).
Rijk Zwaan Australia has also
released several iceberg varieties
that technical sales representative
Steve Natsias said look promising
He said resistance to Bremia and
Nasanovia were essential
characteristics, and recommended
three varieties for summer, winter
and shoulder season har vest.
Siberinas RZ was the new big-
framed Vanguard variety for winter
har vest, characterised by dark
green, large, round, heavy heads
and big outer leaves for protection
in cold periods.
The early-maturing variety grows
well under cold conditions and is
suitable for late May to mid
September har vest.
Bernardinas RZ was a large,
Saladin type for change-over
Relatively slow-bolting, the
variety has a good heart and frame
formation, with good internal
quality for shoulder season
Suitable for har vest from mid-
September to early December, and
mid-March to late May.
Toscanas RZ is Rijk Zwaan's new
iceberg for summer production.
Characterised by a big frame and
head size, with good heat
tolerance, a feature of this variety
was its favourable combination of
good frame size and varietal
Har vest was mid-December to
