King carrots reign
CARROTS are king with consumers,
according to AUSVEG's recent
quarterly Veginsights report.
It has listed the humble orange grocery
staple as the most popular vegetable
purchased by households on a weekly basis.
The potato came second, followed by the
tomato in third place and onions fourth.
Broccoli secured fifth spot, followed by
mushrooms (6), lettuce (7), capsicum (8),
pumpkin (9) and zucchini (10).
While potatoes and tomatoes were not
far off top position, it was broccoli's
movement up the list which surprised
Broccoli jumped from being bought by
under 40 per cent of households to almost
50pc of households during the past two
AUSVEG spokesperson Andrew White
said the results of the report, which relate
to consumer purchasing throughout the
third quarter of 2010, revealed a switch in
consumer behaviour towards salad
components, such as lettuce and tomato,
in the lead-up to summer.
"Clearly, consumers were motivated by
the difference in weather and purchasing
behaviour changed as a result of this, with
a significantly higher proportion of
households purchasing lettuce and tomato,
rather than in the previous quarter," Mr
"Carrots and potatoes were the only
vegetables to be purchased by more than
60pc of households on a weekly basis,
reflecting their market position as staples in
the diet of ever yday Australians."
Data for the report was obtained
through the Meapulse panel, which
receives more than 14,000 responses a
year, making it the largest single-purpose
continuous monitor in the food market in
